Anuran amplexus

Walking through Penicuik Estate today, I encountered this amorous pair of anurans (aka toads) in amplexus (aka embrace) down by the river. Holding my camera only a couple of inches from their noses and then prodding them lightly with a stick, failed to deter them. The male (on top) waits for the female toad to unload her eggs at which point he then fertilizes them. Such an embrace has been known to last several days (apparently). Spring is in the air.

Global cooling

We've had a pretty good winter this year in Penicuik, if you like snow that is. Even so, not many of us were prepared for another bout of snow after the clocks had gone forward. This was the view from the house (front and back) yesterday morning.
